Tools of the Trade - Promoting Positive Behavior Interventions

September 29 and 30, 2008
Deer Creek Resort and Conference Center

The Conference

The Ohio Association of Adult Services is pleased to sponsor its second state-wide conference promoting the use of positive behavior supports. In keeping with the Association's mission to provide leadership and promote quality services that are responsive to the needs and choices of individuals served, we have continuously sought to improve upon the methods used to support individuals to manage their own behavior in a safe and growth-enhancing environment. Tremendous progress has been made in the field and particularly, in Ohio.

This conference will feature Ohio presenters who are using “tools of the trade” to work toward the elimination of restraints in their programs. We are also pleased to welcome back Dr. Karen Heller, who will discuss the relationship between a positive work culture and positive behavior support interventions. Thank you for joining us as we continue our journey toward the next level; the eventual elimination of restraints.

9:15am – 12:00pm The PBIS Connection: The Continuity between Positive Workplace Relationships and Effective Consumer Services
Featured Presenter: Dr. Karen Heller

Session Description: Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS): it's not just for service consumers anymore! Many service agency providers take great care to follow PBIS guidelines when designing programs and supports for their consumers. However, agencies are not as diligent when it comes to practicing PBIS principles in relating with their own staff. This incongruence often leads to increases in interpersonal conflicts, employee absences and attrition, and decreases in employee satisfaction, commitment, and work performance.

This interactive keynote/workshop begins with exploring 6 critical elements of PBIS systems and how we, as agency personnel, can employ these tenets to foster positive workplace relationships. We'll then discuss how we can extend and apply these relational PBIS practices to create collaborative, interagency teams that can develop and provide a diverse repertoire of consumer services. PBIS relationships: we're all connected!
