OAAS is a not-for-profit org that represents member county boards of mental retardation and developmental disabilities in Ohio.
Resources. We represent our member counties by serving as a liaison and resource for county boards of MR/DD and other professional orgs providing services to adults in Ohio. 2008 OAAS Strategic Initiatives

Goal #1 Communication and Training:

  • OAAS will serve as a communications clearinghouse for dissemination of information to member adult services providers: rules, implications, best practices, business practices, member requests, surveys.
  • OAAS will coordinate a one or two-day statewide conference on Positive Behavior Supports in 2008 and begin planning for a larger conference in 2009.
  • OAAS will continue to work in partnership with ODDD and other stakeholders to promote best practice in the areas of supported employment and services for transitioning youth.
  • OAAS will continue to work with ODDD and other stakeholders to promote best practice in the area of adult day services.
  • Pro-actively recruit private day services providers to join OAAS in an effort to promote quality service delivery by all providers.
  • Formally adopt a process for developing “position statements” in response to key issues.
  • Seek additional avenues for the general membership to be more involved with OAAS.
  • OAAS will support the development of new and existing Adult Services Directors in their professional development.

Goal #2 Influence the Development of Rules and Legislation Affecting Adult Services:

  • OAAS will remain active on all rule-writing, public policy committees and work groups that have direct impact on adult services.
  • OAAS members who are on rule work groups will continue to e-mail summaries of meetings to the Board for input and recommendations.
  • OAAS will advocate for a comprehensive state policy pertaining to safe and appropriate supports for persons who demonstrate the need for specific behavioral strategies and interventions.

Goal #3 Promote Self-Determination:

  • Support self-advocates through training and opportunities to network.
  • Provide self-determination information to the membership via the web site, “The Leader” and other means.
  • Ask OSDA to appoint a liaison to the OAAS Board
  • Educate membership about how to make self-determination a priority and move it from theory to practice
  • Promote OSDA regional meetings as a resource to the OAAS membership

Goal #4 SSA and AS Roles:

  • Work with the SSA Directors and OACBMRDD to identify and resolve barriers between SSAs and adult services providers.

OAAS provides opportunities for professional growth and development and coordinates and disseminates valuable info to member orgs to keep them up-to-date in the adult services field.
